Talents Beirut invites 20 emerging cinematographers, editors, sound designers and score composers from the Arab world to take part in a four-day programme of workshops and talks in order to reflect on their own work, connect with other emerging creative talents, and benefit from the knowledge and expertise of distinguished film professionals from the region and beyond.
2019 Edition
The sixth edition of Talents Beirut will be held September 19-23, 2019 at the Metropolis Art Cinema.
With its theme “Glow,” last year’s edition focused on the efforts of Arab creatives to get their projects off the ground – from the initial idea on paper to shooting the film and sharing it with the public.
Experts included Danish sound designer, re-recording mixer and music supervisor Peter Albrechtsen (Dunkirk, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki), cinematographer Thomas W. Kiennast (Three Days in Quiberon) and film editor Gesa Marten (Perestroika – Umbau einer Wohnung). Filmmaker The Fdz and sound designer Lama Sawaya presented a case study of their robot animation in The Last Days of the Man of Tomorrow, a Film Prize of the Robert Bosch Stiftung winner. In addition, director and score composer Rana Eid shared the experience of writing, editing and mixing her documentary feature debut Panoptic with editor and artist Rania Stephan and re-recording mixer Florent Lavallée.
Talents Beirut was organised by the Metropolis Association and the Goethe-Institut in Lebanon. This edition was held alongside the fifth German Film Week, which presented several acclaimed recent features such as Three Days in Quiberon (introduced by director Emily Atef), Western by Valeska Grisebach and In the Aisles by Thomas Stuber, as well as the Syrian/Lebanese/German documentary Taste of Cement by Ziad Koulthoum. There was also a tribute to renowned actress Hanna Schygulla with a presentation of four of her films.
Who can apply?
Cinematographers, editors, sound designers and score composers from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
