The first unit of Kufra gas station resumed generating electricity after stoppage for eight years after an Italian technical staff and a team of engineers and technicians in the station completed maintenance work which lasted nearly two months.
The director of Kufra gas station stated that the maintenance and overhauling the first unit was supervised by an Italian technical staff of the company «Athos Energy» and a team of engineers and technicians at the station.
The first unit of Kufra gas station produces about 25 megawatts during summer peak periods and this step is considered an important factor in the stability of the general electricity grid.
The unit has been idle since 2010 and the station obtained approval of General Electricity Company to supply a new unit with a capacity of between 36 and 40 megawatts which will be implemented during the coming period and the station is seeking approval for additional 15 million-liter fuel tank and maintenance of the existing reservoirs.
It is noteworthy that the city of Kufra consumes about 30 megawatts during the winter and 60 megawatts in the summer, while the production capacity of the two units in the station reach 50 megawatts.
