The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Mossa Al-Koni, warned that delaying the implementation of the railway project in Libya had had negative effects on development projects, stressing the strategic importance of the project and its contribution to bridging distances across the country.

Al-Koni’s statement came during his meeting on Monday with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Railway Project Implementation Agency and a number of department directors who presented the problems and difficulties that hindered the completion of the implementation over the years, according to the media office of the Presidential Council.

Al-Koni reiterated the importance of the strategic project, which would contribute to bridging distances among regions to achieve development in many fields, pledging to “work to overcome difficulties in coordination with the relevant authorities to resume work on the project with the return of the companies tasked with implementing it.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Railway Project Implementation Agency confirmed the desire to complete work on the project, calling for granting the Agency its own development budget so that it could perform the tasks assigned to it in cooperation with the Chinese and Russian companies which had been implementing the railway project for a phase start of the lines of Ras Jadir – Sirte, Misrata – Sabha, and Sirte – Benghazi.

On the sidelines of the meeting on African-Chinese cooperation, which was held during the BRICS summit in South Africa last week, Al-Koni met with Chinese President, Xi Jinping, and discussed with him mechanisms for activating strategic and economic cooperation, as well as the return of Chinese companies to resume work in Libya.
