Akakus Oil Operations has brought under control an oil spill that leaked from a producing well at the Sharara field, the company said on Saturday.

A team from the production department managed to stop a spill leaking from a pipeline running crude from wells P01 and P02 to the O-115 field, Akakus Oil Operations said, confirming that the two wells are now functioning normally with a production capacity of 1,200 barrels per day.

The company did not refer in its statement to the amount or the environmental impact of the spill but ensured that the spilled crude had been suctioned and said it launched cleaning and treatment operations at the affected site.

The Sharara field produces about 280,000 barrels of oil per day and is one of the largest fields in the country. It has recently resumed production after an emergency stop as a result of protesters closing the valve feeding the field.
